Making Support More Accessible for Families
Finding the right support for your child is important. Understanding how to access that support should not be another barrier.
Consultation packages can be planned around an agreed budget. Families can check with their insurer or funding provider about coverage for the proposed services. Funding availability varies depending on individual circumstances, eligibility requirements, and the specific funding program.
Provincial Funding
BC Children and Youth Disability Benefit
British Columbia is transitioning from diagnosis-based Autism Funding to the BC Children and Youth Disability Benefit, a new direct funding program for children and youth with long-term disabilities resulting in significant and/or complex support needs.
Unlike the previous Autism Funding program, eligibility is based primarily on a child's functional support needs, rather than diagnosis alone. Some children qualify through a direct-admission pathway, while others may be eligible through a needs-based review that considers how their disability impacts daily life and participation.
Depending on your child's needs and eligibility, speech-language pathology services and consultation may be an appropriate use of this funding.

BC Children and Youth Disability BenefitAutism Funding (Transition Period)
Families who are currently receiving Autism Funding will transition to the new BC Children and Youth Disability Benefit as the province completes the rollout of the new Children and Youth with Support Needs (CYSN) funding model. Existing families will be contacted by the Ministry regarding their transition.
Extended Health Benefits
Many extended health plans include coverage for Speech-Language Pathology services. Coverage varies depending on your provider and individual plan.
Services that may be eligible for reimbursement:
- Parent consultation
- Communication support planning
- Collaboration with schools and other professionals
Before beginning, please ask your insurer whether the proposed service is covered and whose benefits apply. A parent's attendance does not by itself establish coverage under that parent's plan. Receipts describe the service provided and identify its recipient accurately.
Planning Appropriate Support
We begin with an identified need and an agreed consultation budget. Where your plan covers the proposed service, benefits may help with the cost of consultation to:
- Better understand their child's communication and learning profile
- Navigate educational and therapy decisions
- Prepare for shared discussions with other professionals
- Develop practical strategies for home and school
A focused consultation can help you gain clarity, confidence, and practical next steps for moving forward.
Team-Based Support
Supporting the Team Around the Child
In some situations, and with appropriate consent and funding approval, a child's funding may be used to support consultation and training for the educators and support staff who work directly with that child.
The purpose of this collaboration is to help the child's team better understand their communication profile, learning needs, and effective support strategies so they can provide more consistent support across environments.
While this consultation is always designed to benefit the individual child, educators often discover approaches that strengthen their ability to support other students as well.
By investing in the people who work with a child every day, the impact of support can extend far beyond individual therapy sessions and become part of the child's everyday learning environment.
Indigenous Support
Jordan's Principle
For eligible First Nations children, Jordan's Principle may provide funding for health, educational, and developmental services based on the child's needs.
Depending on eligibility and approval, speech-language pathology services may be included as part of a child's support plan. Within an agreed consultation, I welcome collaboration with families, service coordinators, schools, and communities on communication and participation goals. Families or their chosen coordinators arrange funding applications.
First Nations Community Funding
Many First Nations communities also offer funding or support programs for their members. These programs vary by Nation and community.
I welcome opportunities to work collaboratively with First Nations families, schools, and organizations to support children and youth in culturally respectful and meaningful ways.
