Developing strong social skills is so important because it makes life more pleasant and is absolutely essential for success in school, careers and personal relationships throughout our lives. Our ability to relate to and connect with others is where life opportunities come from. Think about how you met your partner, landed jobs, got the big promotion, went on that amazing and memorable trip with friends, or got support for the business venture that changed your life. All of those opportunities could have been missed if you didn’t have the support of other people, or hadn’t charmed the person you needed to convince.
Starting social skills intervention early in life is especially important for children struggling in social situations, because every year we get older the expectations get higher and the required skills get more complex. Our children may already be missing opportunities such as early childhood friendships because of their challenges. The sooner we intervene with social skills training, the sooner our children can begin to benefit from these opportunities instead of missing them.
